Johnsonville Brat Throwdown!

bratthrowdown_wm

Are you ready for a Throwdown? Why YES I am! My foodie friend Kristy at The Wicked Noodle invited me to join in a “friendly” Johnsonville Brat Throwdown. There was only one rule…we were challenged to come up with a recipe using Johnsonville Brats! Well, never one to shy away from a challenge (I have been known to be banned from board games because of my competitive nature) I threw on my Johnsonville <3′s bell’alimento apron & I jumped right in!

I decided to steer away from the typical and go for something completely non-traditional & totally unexpected! I hope you’ll enjoy my creation. I’m calling it *drum roll please* … BRAT-IOLI ! Yes, it’s my version of a Brat Ravioli if you will. I took the traditional flavors you would associate with a Brat Dog: Beer, Peppers, Onions & of course Brats & used them in a new, exciting, very creative & original way – well at least I think so!

I even invited my extended family over for the tasting and they all gave their stamp of approval (& of course there weren’t any leftovers which is always a great sign that they weren’t just being nice)! I’m hoping you’ll leave your stamp of approval in the comment section below {wink wink}. The brat-ioli went so fast we actually ended up having some traditional brat dogs too!

Please be sure to visit all of the other Throwdown participants listed below & let me know which Brat recipe you liked best (that would be bell’alimento of course * wink wink*, no pressure! LOL)

Brat-ioli

What you’ll need:
4-6 Johnsonville Brats – enough for your family
1 package of wonton wrappers
1 onion – (slice half of onion thin & other half chop)
1/2 ball of fresh mozzarella
2 roasted red bell peppers -chopped
2 tomatoes – chopped
1/2 can of beer (feel free to drink the other half, I won’t tell)
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp cumin
2 cloves of fresh garlic – minced
extra virgin olive oil
s/p

What to do:
Start off by making the filling: Grill your Brats until nice & brown & cooked through. Try not to overturn them. Tip from hubs: You’ll want to use tongs & NOT a fork. You don’t want to puncture the Brats & let all the yummy goodness ooze out!

While Brats are grilling, carmelize your onions by adding 1/2 of your onion chopped thinly to a saute pan with a turn or so of olive oil & cook until they are translucent. Chuck the Brats & the onions into your food processor & add the mozzarella. Pulse until it’s completely mixed together. Set aside to cool.

While mixture is cooling start on your sauce: add about 2 turns of olive oil to your sauce pan over medium-high heat. When oil is hot, add your chopped onions & butter and saute until translucent. Just a few minutes. Add in your minced garlic. Add in your tomatoes season with salt & pepper & cook for a few minutes, then add in beer, roasted red peppers, chili powder & cumin. Stir & reduce the heat to low & allow to simmer & reduce.

While your sauce is simmering, put on a large pot of water to boil (be sure to put the lid on it, it will boil faster) & assemble your brat-ioli. Take your wonton wrapper add a small dollop of brat mixture to the center of the wrapper. You can refer to my dumpling post for step by step instructions on how to fold. Careful not to add too much or the filling will leak out during cooking. When your water has come to a rolling boil add the completed brat-iolis. Cook for just a few minutes until wrappers have become translucent. Remove brat-ioli with a slotted spoon or skimmer – careful not to tear them. Add them to your sauce, toss gently & serve.

Buon Appetito!

I was one of the very lucky ones to be a taste tester, the Brat-ioli was great. The Brat dogs weren’t bad either.

Paula, your brat-ioli sound amazing! I definitely kept it on the simpler side, but I just couldn’t stray from my childhood memories. I wish you lived closer so we could do a taste test!

Wow! This is creative…but totally fits you! I don’t know that we’d ever get the brats from the grill to the ravioli before the were eaten by my family, though! ;-)
