Pizza Grigliata con le Salsicce {Grilled Sausage Pizza}

Who doesn’t like a nice slice of pizza. We adore homemade pizza and make it often BUT during the summer months when it’s smoking hot outside I’m not a huge fan of heating up my oven to sweltering temperatures. Since I don’t have the luxury of an outside pizza oven {dare to dream} the next best way for us to make our beloved pizza is to GRILL it! Grilled pizza is ah-mazing and couldn’t be easier!

I take my HOMEMADE PIZZA DOUGH {no heating up the kitchen to do that just some time and my trusty KitchenAid mixer} my BASIC TOMATO SAUCE {which you can whip up stove-top in about 20ish minutes} then all that’s left to do is decide on the toppings. To satisfy the meat lovers in our house we usually go with SAUSAGE. Johnsonville Italian sausages are our favorites. They are full on flavor and include some of our favorite herbs and spices. They’re so good they have a permanent place in our freezer ; ) They ought to be good because sausage is ALL they do!

Did you hear that Johnsonville is currently featuring a CONTEST? The “Hot Story of the Week” contest features a new, unique question each week (now, through August 15, 2011), where folks can share their “grilling tales,” along with photos and videos. Pizza Grigliata con le Salsicce {Grilled Sausage Pizza}
What you’ll need: {makes enough for two pizzas}
19.76 ounces {1 package} Johnsonville mild sausages – casings removed
A handful of fresh basil – roughly torn, divided
PIZZA DOUGH
2-3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 cup TOMATO SAUCE
2 cups mozzarella cheese – grated
10-12 cherry tomatoes – halved
salt/pepper
cornmeal – to dust
What to do:
1. Make PIZZA DOUGH. Make TOMATO SAUCE.
2. Fire up your grill.
3. WHILE grill is heating, stove-top place a saute pan over medium heat. Add sausages, crumbling them into bite size chunks. Add 1/2 basil leaves and cook over medium heat until sausage is cooked through. Drain any excess fat. Set aside.
4. Roll out your pizza dough to desired thickness. Transfer dough to pizza peel that has been dusted with cornmeal.
5. CAREFULLY place pizza dough onto hot grill. Cook for approximately 1-2 minutes and flip. Cook reverse side for approximately one minute and remove. {I find tongs or a large spatula work well for this}
6. {Divide ingredients between both pizzas} Drizzle a little olive oil on top of dough. Spread on tomato sauce. Top with mozzarella cheese, sausage and tomatoes. Season with salt/pepper. Return pizza to grill. Close grill lid and cook JUST until cheese has melted. Garnish with remaining basil leaves prior to serving.
Buon Appetito!

Now THAT’S a sausage pizza!!!
Late to the party, but a fabulous post and recipe. I’ve not ventured into grilling pizza, as I’ve yet to be successful making it at home. I’ve tried twice, and just havent been spot on. I’ll give your recipe a whirl!
