How To Make Fried Cheese

If you’re looking for an appetizer that is sure to please everyone make fried cheese (formaggio fritto). Even those on a diet will gravitate towards these bites of bliss (don’t worry just take the stairs a few extra times).  The downside, the platter will disappear faster than you can make them. If you’re having a Super Bowl party this Sunday treat your guests to these. They’ll thank you.

Fried cheese couldn’t be easier to make. You’ll need a good quality melting cheese. I used Jarlsberg and then it’s off to your typical one to three dredging/breading station. Today I switched out the breadcrumbs and used WASA flatbread crackers instead. I have loved Wasa products since I was introduced to them when I lived in Italy (a good smear of mascarpone and some marmellata on top is divine for breakfast). Now I’m smitten with their new flatbreads.  I used the Rosemary flatbreads as my “breadcrumbs” and the rest of the box was gone before I knew what happened. Sigh. They’re THAT good!

How To Make Fried Cheese

What You Will Need:

  • 2 cups vegetable/canola oil
  • 12 - 1" cubes of Jarlsberg cheese
  • 1 egg - beaten
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Wasa rosemary flatbreads - finely crushed
  • salt/pepper
  • 12 black olives - pitted
  • 12 leaves of flat leaf Italian parsley

What To Do:

  1. Place oil into a heavy bottom deep sided pan. Heat oil to 350 degrees.
  2. Set up dredging/breading station: Into 3 small separate shallow bowls add: egg, flour, crushed flatbread. Season egg, flour with salt/pepper.
  3. Dip cheese as follows: into egg, flour, egg, flatbreads. Continue until all cubes are breaded.
  4. Carefully place 3-4 breaded cheese cubes into hot oil at a time. Cook until just golden on all sides. Approximately 1-2 minutes. Transfer to a plate lined with kitchen towel to absorb excess grease. Continue until all are cooked.
  5. Place one olive onto a skewer, top cheese cube with parsley leaf and then skewer. Continue until all are assembled.
  6. Serve immediately.

Baked Caprese Salads! I take a whole wheat baguette and spray it with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and get it crispy in the oven. Top it with fresh mozzarella, a thick tomato slice and a little more sea salt and black pepper. Put it back in the oven to melt the cheese and top it with a fresh leaf of basil. They fly off the tray before I even set them down on the table!
