Know Where Your Food Comes From

{rainbow chard, tomatoes, spinach from my local CSA}
Do you know where your food comes from? I mean REALLY comes from. We’re not talking about the grocery store. Most people do not know. We try very hard to buy as much local product as we can. We are part of a CSA that provides us with grass fed meats, produce, dairy, grains, etc. from our state farmers and ranchers. I love knowing where my food comes from as well as supporting my local and state economy.
I also have my own garden. I grow vegetables in raised beds as well as herbs and small breed tomatoes {roma, grape, cherry} in containers on my deck. I love teaching my children about where food comes from, how it’s grown, how to take care of it, and in turn how to cook it so that we don’t waste any. We take the parts that are inedible and turn them into compost which turns into soil to grow more food. You’ve never had a better tomato than the one you’ve grown yourself. Guaranteed. Sadly I cannot grow all of my own food and meats and do supplement at the markets. When shopping I try as best as I can to make informed decisions.

I also realize that not everyone has the time or space to grow their own foods but even so they still have questions about how food is grown and raised, the impact that food has on their health, and more. For the answers to those questions and more, I’d like to introduce you to the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance. “In 2010, America’s farmers and ranchers founded the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance (USFRA) to start and lead an honest dialogue about American agriculture. USFRA has set the table for conversations with Americans to answer their questions about food and food production.”
Feel free to visit their WEBSITE, Find them on FACEBOOK & TWITTER! They encourage you to join the conversation! Get involved! Get answers!
Take a look, this is good stuff! “U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance is partnering with Discovery Communications to continue to help Americans learn more about how food is grown and raised. Check out these videos, featuring real farmers and ranchers answering real consumers’ questions about the agricultural community’s commitment to continuous improvement and the role farmers and ranchers play in providing healthy choices for people everywhere. Please have a seat at our growing table and join in on the conversation.”

Knowledge is power – the more we know the more we can make informed sustainable eco-friendly choices. I would like to know where my apples come from. I try and shop at local farmer’s markets when possible.

I like to know where all my food comes from. In the dead of winter, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to buy a tomato, but at least I’m making an informed choice. And I grow most of my own vegetables in the summer and supplement from the farmer’s market. Thanks for the giveaway.
